Expectant Mums to be given 'Best Start'

Two entrepreneurial mums are hoping their latest business venture will help expectant parents in Calderdale and Huddersfield access vital support and advice in one place.

Andrea Wallman and Melaine Hill, of Calderdale, joined forces to launch ‘The Best Start’ magazine; a free publication providing mums-to-be with local information about what’s available to them.

The idea to launch a magazine came following Wallman’s redundancy from Kirklees Council, and a noticeable gap in the market.

Wallman said: “I’d retrained as a BabyCalm and ToddlerCalm teacher, however when it came to advertising my courses, I noticed a distinct lack of magazines specifically targeted toward pregnant parents or new-mums in the area.”

After getting to know Hill, a director at Yorkshire-based Integrity PR, and also the editor of Halifax-based magazine, ‘The Scally Mag’, the pair agreed to work in partnership on the new publication.

“There are around 6,000 births each year in Calderdale and Huddersfield, and I was always giving out numerous leaflets on my antenatal courses, so a magazine seemed a step in the right direction,” added Wallman.

‘The Best Start’ magazine will be produced three-times a year and around 3,000 copies will be available from GP surgeries, antenatal clinics and other baby related outlets throughout Calderdale and Huddersfield.

And despite the doom and gloom of a double-dip recession, Wallman hasn’t looked back at her self-employment venture.

“Being made redundant helped give me the determination to go out there and start my own business.  In the current economic climate it was admittedly a little daunting, but I don’t regret anything — it is the best thing I’ve ever done!” said Wallman. She added: “Being pregnant is an exciting, but equally overwhelming and scary time.  Hopefully with our help we can give expectant parents ‘The Best Start’.”

The first edition is expected during October.
